McGaughey wins Gardner Cup event on day of high-scoring at Raceview

The Gardner Cup was presented to Ballymena Golf Club by the family of Lyle Gardner, who was a past secretary and former Captain of the club.

The newest recipient of the trophy is Darren McGaughey who, playing off an 11 handicap, posted a total of 44 stableford points.

Equal nines of 22 points came from five pars, birdies on the second and ninth, a bogey on the first plus a double bogey at the fifth.

His second nine opened wit ha birdie followed by a double bogey, birdie and the last six holes read birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey par, par for another 22 points.

Second place went to Terry O’Neill (19) who accumulated 43 points.

A first nine of 21 points came from five pars plus three bogeys and a non-event on the par five ninth.

The second nine saw Terry return four pars, four bogeys and a double bogey at the 12th for 22 points.

Brian Russell (17) collected the third nett prize with 42 points, 22 of them coming from the second nine.

Brian’s car contained eight pars, six bogeys three double bogeys plus a birdie on the par three 14th.

Fourth nett was Chris McCrory (12) who had the best of three 40-point returns.

He scored 19 points on the front nine, which included a no-score at the sixth. The back nine contained no pars and was made up of six bogeys, along with birdies at the 10th, 13th and 17th and totalled 21 points, which was matched by fifth nett winner William Montgomery but Chris scored seven points on the last three holes against Montgomery’s five.

William , off 23, had three double bogeys on his outward nine for 19 points while his back nine contained everything from a three to a seven at the final hole which proved costly in the end.

Sixth nett prize went to Darren Hill (12) who also scored 40 points but with equal nines of 20.

A first nine of five pars and four bogeys accounted for Darren’s front nine, while the back nine opened with a par followed by two bogeys and the next six holes saw him register a four on all six holes for an additional 20 points.

Gary Black (2) again came up trumps in the best gross category with a score of five under gross.

Gary’s opening nine featured six pars, with birdies on the first, seventh and ninth to be out in 32 shots and a flawless round was completed with seven pars and two birdies on the homeward nine.

SUNDAY OPEN

The open stableford on the Sunday was won by Mark Surgenor, a 13-handicapper from neighbouring Galgorm Castle Golf Club, who notched a total of 41 points.

William Tuff (12) was second with a total of 40 points, of which 21 came on the outward nine.

The best gross prize was won by Paddy Kearney, who played the course in two over par, 70 shots.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

Ferguson McKelvey came good again in the Wednesday open stableford where the 11-handicapper won with a total of 38 points and on a better second nine from runner-up Gerard Rafferty.
