Michael is the clear winner of Sam Wilson trophy at Lisburn

Michael Leathem (4) was a clear winner of the Sam Wilson Trophy (for over 55s) at Lisburn last Saturday.

In blustery conditions Michael got off to a great start, after an opening par he followed with three birdies.

Unfortunately two bogeys and dropped another stroke at the ninth gave him a front nine of 36. Three birdies on the back nine at 12, 15 and 17 gave him a back nine of 33 for a round of 69 and 43 points.

Colin Jeffers (15) was second with 40 points after a great second nine. He finished with two threes for a back nine of 38 and 24 points.

Myles Connery (12) had 18 points on the front nine followed by two double bogeys. He finished with 19 points on the last seven holes for a total of 39 and third place.

Simon McCall and Stephen Stewart were next with 38 points. David Walsh had the best gross score.

The younger competitors competed for the August Stableford. Gary Brett (18) was the winner with 40 points followed by Patrick Buckley (8) on 39 with Peter Maxwell (12) third on 38. Stephen Shaw had the best gross score.

Three birdies at the par three holes helped Stuart Campbell (5) win the Wednesday Stableford competition with 40 points. He failed to birdie the fourth hole. His birdie two at the final hole gave him the winning score on count back from Sam McCalister (17). Four competitors finished on 38: Eric Wilkinson (23), Richard Warwick (13), David McCallister (7) and Barry McQuillan (20). Eric was third on count back.

Lisburn travelled to Mannan Castle in the Sam Rutherford competition. They did well to come away with a deficit of seven holes. Two Lisburn pairs won their matches: Stephen Stewart & Andy Parr and David McCalister & Randal Kernaghan.

Lurgan defeated Belvoir Park in the final of the Fred Daly trophy at Lisburn on Sunday evening. The match had to be postponed twice due to bad weather.

Congratulations to Greg Bailie on winning the Portstewart Junior Scratch Cup. he won by one stroke after rounds of 76 and 77. In the qualifying round for the Ulster Under 13 championships at Dunmurry, Aaron Marshall shot 81 and Jack Shellard 87. The finals take place at Moyola Park later this month.
