No doubting Thomas as he lands President’s Day prize at Raceview

The winner of the top prize was Thomas W. Ballentine who, playing off a handicap of 15 posted a total of 43 points of which 24 came from the second nine holes.

Ballentine is another of the junior brigade who have been playing so well this season and this has been reflected in the Holt Shield team of which three of the five man team are of the past youth squad.

Thomas (15) opened his round with two pars while the other sven holes of the first nine accounted for six dropped shots plus pars on the seventh and eighth giving him 19 points.

The second nine saw a transformation as, having dropped a shot on the tenth, he then went for birdie and then completed the nine with four pars plus boegys on the 16th and 18th for an additional 24 points to add to his first nine total of 19 giving him an overall total of 43 points and a winning margin of one point from William A. H. Montgomery.

William, off a 12 handicap, returned equal nines of 21 points and the first nine hole total included a non-event on the par three fourth.

The other eight holes contained three pars, three boegys plus a birdie on the seventh and ninth.

The back nine opened with a birdie followed by three bogeys and another birdie of the 14th (his third two of the round) and he completed his round with two pars plus bogeys on the final two holes.

Craig McCartney (6) took the third prize with an overall total of 41 points of which 22 came from the front nine which he played in one under gross having scored six pars, birdies on the seventh and eighth with the only dropped shot being on the par three fourth.

Entering the back nine witha dropped shot which he retrieved on the next hole he then had two bodeys but went on to complete the round with a birdie on the 14th plus a trio of pars plus a dropped shot on the 17th for an additinal 19 points and Craig’s total of 41 was one ahead of a trio of 40 point returns.

Fourth prize went to Millar Eagleson (14) who scored 40 points with equal nines of 20 points and Millar will most definitely reflect back to the par five 9th where he had a non score but he came good over the last six holes where he scored 14 points against 13 from Thomas Surgeoner and eleven from Trevor Hamill.

Eagleson had a total of seven pars, seven bogeys, a double bogey on the 15th and he had a birdie on the 7th and 17th, the latter being worth four points alone.

Surgenor (14) took the fifth prize also with 40 points and his last six hole total was two points better than Trevor Hamill’s. Thomas played the first nine in five over gross which contained three paers, four bogeys, a double bogey on the par five third and completed his front nine with a birdie on the 9th for his 20 points.

The second nine commenced with three bogeys in the first four holes to which he aded four pars but alas a non score arrived on the final hole which was rather costly as a par would have put him into second place but experience tells you this happens all the time.

Hamill, off a 12 handicap, had a steady front nine of five pars plus four bogeys for 20 points but the last six holes were his downfall producing only 11 points of which three were singles.

The final nett prize was won by Gordon Bell (12) who had a total of 39 points with 22 coming from the second nine holes. 17 points came from the front nine where he scored three pars, five bogeys plus a double bogey on the sixth.

The back nine opened with a par, a bogey plus a double bogey and then Gordon hit a hot streak as he parred five of the last six holes with the other score being a birdie of the 15th which added four points to his total for the nine.

The youthful brigade came good in the best gross with Adam Brady (4) touring the course in one over 69 shots.

Adam’s outward nine commenced with a bogey, a double bogey, par, birdie and then five pars.

The inward nine was a picture of consistency where he scored eight pars and the 13th was a birdie which saw him home in one under and one over gross for the round.

LADIES

Tracey Hughes won the prestigious President’s Prize competition for the ladies’ section with a nett score of 71.

Sectional winners in the same event were:

A - Jennifer Eagleson; B - Zandra Douglas; C - Janet Gaston.

HOLT SHIELD

The Holt Shield team had a tremendous result when they played Mahee Island away and won by four games to one.

The winners were Craig McCartney, Adrian Gough, Paul Stevenson, Adam Barr with Nigel Getty defeated.
