Peter ‘Robs’ the top prize on countback with a steady round at Dunmurry GC

The first of two knockout qualifying competition took place at Dunmurry Golf Club on Saturday with the top 16 going through to the match play stage.

Despite the excellent conditions, scoring was not as good as in previous weeks.

Peter McRoberts playing off four was the top qualifier with an excellent two over par 72 for a nett 68.

He was a model of consistancy, dropping a shot on the second but bounced back with a birdie three on the fifth.

He recorded pars at every hole until he drop a shot at each of the last two holes, but it did not proved costly as he picked up the top prize.

Second place went to Johnny Moore (18) who went round both nines in 43 shots for a nett 68, however he will regret his finishing holes on each nine – dropping three shots on the last two of the front nine and four shots on the last two holes of the back nine which cost him first prize.

Third spot went to M Ward (21) also on 68 with fourth spot going to Paul Gatt (18) also on 68 losing out on BB9, while Noel Magill (6) picked up fifth spot thanks to a level par back nine of 35 which included a birdie three on the 17th.

Senior Cup player, Darren Crowe (-2) returned to action with a superb one under 69 going out in one over par 36 which included a birdie three at the 6th.

On the back nine, Darren recorded seven pars and two birdies at the 13th and 15th for a two under 33 and overall 69.

The draw for the first Round of The Doris Barbour Trophy (Top 16 Qualifiers in last Saturday’s Competition) is as follows - T. Gracey v W. Farrell, F. Coyle vs P. McRoberts, P. Gatt v O. Morton, M. Warde v J. McCallion, C. Ward v H. Larkin, I. O’Rorke v T. McKay, C. Morgan v J. McAree, N. Magill v J. Moore.

TEAM NEWS

The Senior Team began their campaign in the Belfast and District Cup with a hard fought 3.5-3.5 draw at home against Bangor.

Supporters were treated to some outstanding match play and Team Captain Tony Cassidy can travel with his team for the away leg confident of progressing to the next round of the Competition.

In the Ulster Cup, Dunmurry headed to Portsalon G.C. in Donegal leading 4.5 –2.5.

James Keag’s team travelled looking for a strong performance to secure victory.

Unfortunately this was not to be as a strong Portsalon team won 6-1 on home soil. Dunmurry, though, pushed them all the way with many of the matches decided on the 18th!

In the Holt Shield, Daryl Flannagan’s team enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 victory away at

Helen’s Bay G.C. on Sunday, thanks to victories by Noel Magill, Colin Power Ward Farrell and Neil Forsythe
