PGA Tankards win for Garry at Portstewart

Garry McGrotty hit a superb 38 points in awful conditions last Thursday to win the PGA Tankards event by five clear points.

Garry plays off five and all of these shots had been used by the time he got to the turn. Out in 40 shots and with 17 points scored Garry played the first five holes of the back nine in three under par, birdying the par four eleventh and both par fives in the process, to be back in one under par 35. This gross set him up for a super 21 points from the homeward nine and allowed Garry to sign for his 38 points.

Another single figure handicapper, Jim Lenfesty (8), took the runners up spot with 35 points. Jim had a good front nine tally of 19 points in spite of not scoring at the short sixth. His birdy four at seven helped him recover from this. On the return leg Jim scored steadily in the strong winds but again faltered at a par three, the fifteenth, and returned 14 points from the nine.

The resulting 33 point total gave him second spot from a couple of 32 returns the better of which was that of Ivan McDonald’s. The severe wind and some seriously poor putting helped Ivan to several one pointers and a blank at the sixth, restricted the points tally for the front nine to 15. On the inward nine advantage was taken of a following wind and scoring improved to 17 points, again with a blank at sixteen. That back nine return eased Eamon Cassley into fourth place on countback, Eamon scoring 15 to Ivan’s 17. He struck a birdy four up the seventh but missed out on the points at nine and was scoring well on the home leg. Then he turned into the gale at fifteen and sixteen to get nothing out of either of them.
