Poor weather disrupts play at local golf clubs

The inclement weather on Saturday necessitated a postponement of play at the start of week fourteen of Rockmount’s 2013/2014 Andrew Annett Winter League competition.

Whilst a number of hardy players did brave the wet and windy conditions at times the course was unplayable and therefore will not be counted in the overall scores.

The Team scores and Singles scores have however been updated. In Group A last week’s leaders “The Bad and the Ugly” have retained first place and now have 699 points; “We’re Slicers Not Hookers” have consolidated their second place and have 693 points. “Widow Twanky goes to Malahide” and “The Rat Trap” are jointly third with 687 points.

The top three in Group B remain the same with leaders “Paddy one Putt” increasing their lead to ten points, they now have 706 points. “As You Were” are second on 696 points and “Mr Ivan’s Boys” third with 685 points.

Likewise in group C the top three remain the same with “Talk a Good Game” 700 points retaining a healthy lead from team “TBA” in second place on 686 points, “The Handbrakers” and “One Two Fee” remain joint third with the same points 682. In Group D last week’s new leaders “The Drawshank Redemption” have 690 points with “Sultans of Swing” second on 681 points; “FAB” remain third with 674 points but have been joined on that score by the “The Camel Hunters”.

In the Singles competition the low section (0-11) continues to be led by Ryan Wilson with 234 points; Alan Young has 229 points and Mark Kyle has 228 points.

In the middle section (12-17) last week’s new leader Frank Wallace, 236 points, has opened up a healthy seven point lead from Charlie Lally and Russell McDonald who both have 229 points.

The high section (18-28) sees no change in the top two with David Neeson leading on 230 points and Colin Davis second with 227 points and Jon Trimble is now third with 225 points.

Meanwhile, the early starters at Lisburn could only manage a few holes before the heavy rain put an end to their round of golf last Saturday. When the sixth green became flooded there was no other option but to discontinue play.

More rain closed the course on Sunday but it was open again on Monday.

Two rounds of the Winter League have now been lost and the qualification conditions for the team to represent the club in the match against Portstewart and Clandeboye may have to be revised.

Despite the damp conditions the planned work on the trees along the A1 dual carriageway proceeded last Sunday.

Several trees that were in a dangerous condition or were overhanging the road were removed.

The carriageway beside the Golf Club was closed for several hours. The remaining work will be carried out next Sunday.

The Golf Club is responsible for the trees within its boundaries and work on the trees overhanging the Eglinton road will commence soon.

The Golf club would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists.
