Stunning eagle finish helps Reid claim May medal competition at Galgorm

The Bosch Tools sponsored May Medal played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club turned into a dual between Michael Reid (-1) and Gary Moon (17).

Moon led by three shots at halfway and continued to lead right up to the final hole where he was joined by Reid. Reid was three shots behind Moon entering the back nine. However, through 13 he had dropped another two shots behind.

He gradually clawed his way back to three behind after the Lowlands with one to play. Moon finished with a double bogey but a super eagle three from Reid and the pair were level and with a better back nine Reid won the Overall Prize with Moon in the Runner-up position. The pair finished three shots ahead of their nearest rival.

In Division 1 at the turn George Watt (10) and JJ McAnally (5) were one, two and three shots respectively ahead of Paul Sittlington (10), Ricki Simpson (8) and Mal Bellew (7).

Through thirteen Watt had taken a one shot advantage over McAnally with an improving Bellew moving up to join JJ. A further shot behind came Sittlington and Simpson. With two to play Bellew was the new leader by one shot from Sittlington, Watt and Simpson with McAnally in the rear by another shot. In a very close finish Simpson came home par, birdie to win by one shot from Bellew (bogey, par), Sittlington (two pars), Watt (two pars) and J.J.McAnally (par, birdie) who finished together. Bellew with a better back nine took second place with Sittlington (better back nine) third.

At halfway in Division 2 thirteen handicapper Darryl Robinson was two shots ahead of Kieran Chappell (11) and Malcolm McIlroy (14) who were a shot ahead of Henry Cubitt (14). Robinson ran into big trouble at thirteen and lost his lead. Chappell took over to lead by two shots from McIlroy and Cubitt with Robinson now another two shots behind.

Up the Grove Chappell increased his lead to three shots over Cubitt who was joined by Robinson. McIlroy was a further shot behind. Chappell lost his lead when he ran into trouble in the Lowlands and Cubitt took a two shot advantage. McIlroy was also two shots behind with Robinson a further shot down. Cubitt with a par at the last held on to his two shot advantage to win from Chappell who also parred the last. McIlroy (bogey) and Robinson (par) finished together and with a better back nine third place went to McIlroy.

John McClintock (18) was a shot ahead of Neil Fitzsimmons (16) turning for home in Division 3 with David Kilpatrick (17) another six shots behind. Through thirteen McClintock had increased his lead to four shots over Fitzsimmoms followed by Kilpatrick another three shots behind. Fitzsimmons with the help of two pars and a mishap by McClintock at Beechers had closed the gap to one shot with two to play. Kilpatrick was still another three shots adrift.

John McClintock came home bogey, bogey and held on to win by one shot from Fitzsimmons (par, double bogey) and Kilpatrick with a bogey, birdie finish closed the gap to within one shot of Fitzsimmons to take third place. Ronnie Taylor (16), David McAleese (17), Aidan Donnelly (17), David McIlroy (17), Alan Knox (17) and James McClintock (17) all finished three further shots behind.

In Division 4 after the front nine Trevor Galloway (25) held a narrow one shot advantage over Drew Stewart (23). Colin Orr (20) was another shot away followed by David Caves (23) and Philip Magill (20) a further shot down. Through fourteen Caves had moved through to take a one shot lead over Stewart. Galloway, Magill and Orr were a further five shots behind.

Caves maintained his one shot advantage through seventeen but with a new challenger in Galloway. Stewart was another two shots behind with Magill and Orr two more shots down. Galloway with a bogey at eighteen drew level with Caves (double bogey) but with a better back nine Caves held on to win with Galloway second. Stewart (par) finished in third place two shots ahead of Magill (par) and Orr (par).

Jordan Hood (-1) won the Gross and Stephen Mailey (9) the Seniors.
