Tallon tops on day of tough scoring in the Baird Cup

The winner was three-handicapper Francie Tallon who won with a five under par score of 41 points. In a tidy round his only blemish was a bogey on the twelfth. The rest of his round comprised three birdies and 14 pars. Holes 1, 4 and 11 were the birdie scores.

Runner-up was Billy Bateman with his total of 40 points. This 11 handicapper had only pars or bogeys on his card. His day began with pars on the opening four holes. Starting on the eighth he recorded a run of five pars and concluded his round with pars on holes 15 and 17 for second spot. Third net prize went to Conal Coleman with his three under par 39 points. This five handicapper started with bogeys on the opening three holes. He rallied and had a run of par, birdie, par on the next three. Further success came with a par on the eighth and birdies on the next two holes. Another birdie at the thirteenth and pars ensued the rest of the way home.

Two handicapper Martin McAvoy grabbed the gross award with 35 points. Martin had a mixture of scores ranging from birdies at 1, 4, 10 and 18 to a double bogey on the fourteenth. Pars were his lot on the rest, except for a bogey on the seventh. In the low section George Harkness took the honours with 38 points. His front nine comprised six pars to go alongside bogeys at holes 1, 3 and 6. A birdie at the tenth gave him a flying start to the back nine. A quintet of pars at holes 11, 12 13, 15 and 16 saw him safely across the finish line.

George Kidd won the middle section with 38 points. This 16 handicapper took the spoils despite a no-return at the third and a double-bogey at the twelfth. Pars at holes one, five, seven and nine were his feature scores on the front nine. On the back nine he can thank pars at holes 10, 17 and 18 for this success. Indeed, a better score on the last six holes just edged him into the winning circle.

In the high section the winner was Hugh McCloskey with his level par 36 points to hold on for the win in spite of four double-bogeys. A birdie at the second and pars at holes 1, 8, 11 and 17 were his exemplary scores.
