This week Rainey 1st XI pulled out a well deserved 4-0 win away to Grosvenor.

The team went out strong from the offset using the first 10 minutes to assert their dominance with the defence of Nicola Sargent, Jenna Bowman and Louise McMaster patiently distributing the ball across the back to create space.

This gave midfielders Koren Ferguson, Kirsty McLarnon, Rachel Burns, Judith Quigley and Lauren Mulholland room to play in.

Rainey’s patience was finally rewarded when Rachel Burns dribbled into the circle firing the ball towards Grosvenor’s defence.

It was picked up and put into the back of the net by Emma Currie, giving the Rainey Ladies a 1-0 advantage at half time.

The second half got off to a roaring start when Rainey managed to secure the ball almost immediately from Grosvenor’s pass back and Lorraine Hyndman demonstrated how to keep cool under pressure as she went one-on-one with the keeper. Hyndman found the net with a phenomenal reverse stick goal from a tight angle.

This did not to satisfy Rainey as they came out again all guns blazing. The forward line of Carolyn Burns, Nikki Clarke, Jayne Speer, Emma Currie and Lorraine Hyndman kept Grosvenor defence under pressure and this resulted in a third goal from the top of the circle by Nikki Clarke.

Assaults by Grosvenor were quickly taken down with the Rainey defence remaining tight throughout. Some great saves by goalkeeper Erin Mulholland and Nicola Sargent in particular having a very strong game.

But Rainey had the last word with a phenomenal reverse shot from Rachel Burns going into the roof of the net to seal the game.

Grosvenor put up a decent fight but on the day it was Rainey who put up a strong team performance with some great individual play leading to a satisfying 4-0 win.
