Joe finishes top of the class in Midweek Open Stableford

A 4 Ball Better Ball Stableford competition was held at Ballycastle Golf Club on Sunday 30 August and the winning combination was that of Allan Mc Cook and Charlie Mc Henry with a total of 46 points.

In second place came the pairing of Joe Donnelly and Austin Mullan with 45 points. One point behind them came Club Treasurer Fergus Busby and Paul Glackin who defeated the Liam Mc Gonigle/Gerard Norwood and Trevor Blaney/Sammy Knowles partnerships on countback.

Retiring retired Dalriada teacher Joe Tannahill finished top of the class in the Midweek Open Stableford held on 02 September. Crossing the road after the first five holes Joe had accumulated no less than 14 points and built on this start to finish with a total of 39 points. Standing on the 18th tee Peter Donnelly was only one over par for the back nine but unfortunately registered a 6 at the Par 5 18th which meant he had to settle for second place. Three players on 37 points contested the remaining places. Francis Mc Cartan from Fortwilliam claimed third place on countback from Trevor Blaney whose better back nine meant he was able to slip past brother Richard who also finished on 37 points.

The last stoke play competition of the 2015 season was staged on Saturday 5 September. The competition in question was the September Medal and the man claiming the spoils was Patrick Campbell. Playing in what at times were testing conditions the 20 handicapper negotiated his way round the course very steadily. He possibly thought he had blown his chances with consecutive sixes at the 13th and 14th but a solid finish over the 4 remaining holes gave him a 2 shot advantage over his nearest rival. That was Match and Handicap convenor Rory Gallager who, playing off 6, had a very solid nett 68 which enabled him claim first spot in the Division 1 section.

A birdie finish at the last gave Michael Hegarty‘s nett 69 the edge over the rest of the field in the Division 2 section,winning it by a solitary stroke whilst John Michael claimed the Division 3 section top spot also with a nett 69. John probably thought his race was run as he stood on the Par 3 17th tee but a Hole-In-One meant his day took a definite turn for the better! Congratulations John. Best gross of the day went to scratch player Liam Reilly with a fine 2 over par 73.

MICHAEL HOEY

Michael Hoey fired a superb seven-under-par 64 in Moscow to end the Russian Open in joint fourth place. The five-times European Tour winner carded four straight birdies from the second and picked up shots at 11, 12 and 13.
