Jubilee Cup launched

The Jubilee Cup is up for grabs on Sunday, June 3 and it’s hoped the trophy can be contested on a yearly basis.

Jamie Serplus, vice chairman of the Institute Darts Committee, said: “The Institute used to have an annual doubles tournament, but it fell by the wayside.

“We decided we needed to bring back a darts trophy, but this will be a singles rather than a doubles tournament.

“It fitted in well with the Jubilee weekend so we named it the Jubilee Cup to coincide with that.”

He added: “We’re hoping to get a big entry for this inaugural event and get a buzz going so we can increase the prize money the following year and keep building up in years to come.

“There’s a big interest in televised darts at the minute, but not as many people come to play and watch local darts.

“It’s got the potential to be equally as a good a night out and you’re a lot closer to the action.”

The Institute Darts Team, captained by Gary Anderson (not the Scottish PDC player, but on his day no less capable) alongside honorary president John ‘Wacky’ Weatherall, were one of the founding members of the Armagh Darts League that they still throw in to date.

Jamie said: “The team has 12 members of all ages from their twenties to their sixties but we’re always on the look out for new players which would allow us to reform our ‘B’ team.

“We’re also on the look out for sponsors - even if it’s just a small donation for a dart board surround which would mean the company name would be on display during all our home games.”

The Institute Jubilee Cup takes place on Sunday, June 3 at 1pm. Entry fee is £3 payable at the Members Bar. Prizes include £100 for first place and £50 for runner up as well as prizes for semi finalists, highest check out and least darts.
