Kearney's delight at derby day win

After a fairly convincing derby day win United manager Oran Kearney was understandably delighted with the result.

"We played very well and I thought our performance from start to finish from everyone was excellent," he said.

"It's always good to win your derby games, not just for the players but for the fans too as we know how much they enjoy it.

"It was a super result for us and to be honest it's one that I'm over the moon about.

Despite not having a competitive fixture for December the United boss was very pleased with his team's fitness.

"After not being able to train properly nor having a competitive game I was a little wary there may be a bit of rustiness.

"Thankfully though the players all looked very fit which is a credit to them that they have kept themselves in shape.

"Considering we only played Newtown in a friendly last Tuesday night then we have to be pleased with this.

"We have to make sure that we continue this now as well and we will be continuing to push the players hard."

With this result taking the Roesiders up to second in the Ladbrokes.com Championship, Kearney was more than happy.

"These three points puts us second in the league now and it's a clear second as well ahead of several teams.

"With so many cup games coming up this month then it was vital that we picked up three points from this game.

"They way things are with fixtures now I think that we should remain in second place for the month of January."

With the team being in a very positive position for the second half of the season the manager feels it's important that they have something to play for, for as long as possible.

"We have said to the players before that we want things to be exciting for them for as long as possible.

"That means keeping ourselves in top positions in the league and that's what we will be aiming to do.

"We want to be involved right to the end of the season and so it's vital that we keep picking up the three points.

"We are in a good position now and it's up to us to maintain that to the end of the season," concluded Kearney.
