Kids TRYathlon 2015 launched

Triathlon fever is set to hit the city this summer with the announcement that the firmus energy City of Derry Kids’ TRYathlon 2015 will take place on Sunday, June 7th at the Templemore Sports Complex.

With the growing popularity of adult triathlons, it is now the turn of the kids to get their goggles, running shoes and helmets at the ready as they will have the opportunity to give the sport a go.

Up to 300 children and teenagers, aged 8-15 years old, will be able to take part in the event which has been organised by the North West Triathlon Club and supported by firmus energy and Derry City Council as part of the lead up to the newly crowned National Series race the following weekend.

Sports Development Officer with Derry City Council Thomas McCallion explained the format of the event. “The kids’ TRYathlon began in 2013 and has been building in popularity year on year, so we’re expecting a big turnout for 2015. The event features a mixture of cycling, running and indoor swimming challenges for children and teenagers, so if there is an area that they are not so confident in - such as swimming for example - they can simply ‘TRY’ the other two.

“All kids will go home with a medal so they will get a great sense of achievement.”

Meanwhile success in Triathlon Ireland’s National Series in 2014 has given top Londonderry triathlete Danny Quigley a chance to exclusively compete against the country’s best of the best this year.

The 23 year-old personal trainer has enjoyed a steady rise in the rankings in recent seasons and 2014 saw him compete with professional triathletes for medals in National Series races.

As a result of his consistent strong performances last season, Danny will now join an exclusive group of the country’s best triathletes in TI’s new Super 6 series.
