And why not? Just turned nine, he has already proved his worth by being named Most Improved Driver at the Ulster Karting Club’s annual awards.

He came fourth in Ulster in his first year racing in the Honda Cadet Karting Championships, a notable beginning to his karting career.

“He was absolutely over the moon to win the award,” said Cameron’s dad Kenneth. “For somebody to recognise that he has improved and for him to see that he is getting there and learning is fantastic.

“It makes it all worth it for us and gives him a great focus to win more.

“He has been driving karts since he was three and driving around our driveway. There has been an awful lot of hard work. He has had to learn his new racecraft and the rules of the new discipline such as the flags.

“We also have to sacrifice our evenings and some weekends as well as summer holidays. It’s what we want to do for him because we can see that he has a desire plus a talent to go further in the sport.”

Cameron is eligible to race in the cadet category until he turns 11. After that, he will look to progress a career that that he hopes will end in Formula One racing.

“That’s still his desire,” said Kenneth.

“When he was five, he went to the Eddie Irvine Karting Academy in Bangor and passed it two years in a row. Eddie chatted to him and, although Cameron didn’t understand who he was at the start, when we showed him, it was a great inspiration for him.

“Somebody can do it from Northern Ireland so why not Cameron?”

And the young driver is fast discovering that off the road factors also play a part in any potential progress.

Kenneth said: “The worry is that it all comes down to the finance you can put in to be able to get out there. You need to be racing in England.

“Cameron is already learning that it’s all about sponsors and looking after them as well as you can. He’s doing that through promotion on race days, on his kart and on his social media profiles.

“We have to thank our sponsors, particularly Nigel Jordan from Jordan Concrete, Geoffrey Hagan from Aurora Signs and Ian and Gareth Greer from Rainbow Signs.”
