McKinney bags a hat-trick as Carrick sink Grosvenor

They ran in 10 unanswered tries, had the bonus point secure by half-time, and would undoubtedly have had more scores if the referee had not decided to blow for full-time about 15 minutes early.

Aaron McKinney landed a hat-trick of tries in the first half, Ross Crymble got two tries and was involved in several more, and skipper Johnny Cullen capped another fine performance with arguably the best try of the match.

Andy Kinkaid produced one of his barn-storming performances and scored a try and made another for McKinney, while Robbie Williams, who seems to have an affinity for the blind-side role to which he was switched when Michael Smylie came on as a substitute at half-time, grabbed two tries.

The first points came after three minutes when Luke Whittall put over a penalty. He then converted a Ross Crymble try before adding the extras when Curtis Rea crashed over. McKinney’s first and second tries went unconverted before Ross Crymble added Carrick’s fifth try of the afternoon. McKinney put Carrick 37-0 up at half-time and the second session was barely a minute old when Cullen ran in to score. Further tries from Kinkaid, Williams and Smylie compounded Holywood’s misery.

It was another very good performance by Carrick but, after facing Holywood at home this weekend, they will take on sterner opposition in their final two league games against Academy and Omagh.
