Mehaffey adds Irish championship to preparations for high-profile period

The Scarva teenager will tackle the BMW Championship Pro-Am as part of a top-class field before tackling the most high-profile women’s amateur tournament.

Success on Sunday in the Irish final marked a fitting starting point for forthcoming challenges - with a stunning eagle just one highlight.

It marks a third trophy triumph of the campaign for the Tandragee member.

“It means a lot,” said Mehaffey. “I’ve come close to winning this one many times so it’s nice to finally seal the deal.

“I played really well in the matchplay stages and it’s great to have some confidence going forward.

“Thinking about the month that I have coming up is super exciting.

“I’ll have to put in a lot of preparation work with my coaches over the next few weeks to make sure I’m ready.”

At club level, Tandragee’s Club Stableford was won by Peter Crosby on Sunday as the leading player on 41 points alongside Gareth Burns and William Small.

The ladies’ Manchester Cup - sponsored by Ballylisk Car Sales - finished with Suzy Walsh first.

A front-nine tally of 17 points and 25 across the back leg left Walsh top over Aideen Canavan of County Armagh Golf Club and Lynn Moorhead, with Barbara Richardson completing the top four.

Rebekah Moorhead won the gross prize, with the section leaders as follows: A - Susan McMorrow 37 points; B - Esther Paul 38; C - Vivienne Loney 37; front nine - Liz Walsh 20; back nine - Kathryn Moorhead 22.

The Mixed Greensomes featured Lynn Moorhead and John Haffey at the head of the IMC Glass-sponsored monthly open field.

They posted 40 points to edge clear of Bethany Thornbury and Joe Thornbury, plus Dolores Hamill and Mark Bannerman.

The Carmel Maney Memorial Cup featured Niki Browne in top spot on 41 points over Vivienne Loney and Shirley Cole.

Tandragee’s Ulster Cup team returned from Silverwood on a 7-0 advantage - with wins for John Haffey and Stefan McNeill wrapping up success at home to set up a date with Moyola.

In the Pierce Purcell, Tandragee’s qualifying round in Mannan left the Eddie Harbinson-led panel fourth on 367 points. Tandragee will face Neurmore in the matchplay’s opening round.

Tandragee’s Irish Mixed Foursomes team missed out at Banbridge on qualification after a seventh-place finish.
