NW200: Alastair Seeley equals Robert Dunlop’s record

Alastair Seeley wrote his name into the history books as he joined Robert Dunlop on 15 victories at the Vauxhall International North West 200 after winning the opening Superbike race on Saturday.

It was Seeley’s third win of the meeting after the 35-year-old sealed a double in the Supersport class.

The Carrick man made a race-winning move on the fifth and final lap to pass Yorkshireman Ian Hutchinson (PBMW Kawasaki) and opened a slight gap on the Tyco BMW to win by 0.3 seconds.

Behind Hutchinson, veteran racer Bruce Anstey from New Zealand took third place on the Valvoline Padgetts Honda.

Fermanagh’s Lee Johnston (ECC/Burdens BMW), Michael Rutter on the Penz13.com Bathams BMW and Honda Racing’s John McGuinness completed the top six.

William Dunlop came out on top of a battle with his Tyco BMW team-mate Guy Martin to take seventh place.

Michael Dunlop was a retirement on his new Milwaukee Yamaha R1.

The race schedule has been severely delayed at the North West following a serious incident in the Superstock race, which has left a female spectator in a critical condition.

Three riders were involved, including Stephen Thompson and Austrian Horst Saiger, plus Dean Harrison from Bradford, who escaped without injury.
