Carrick consideredOrange ‘twin’ on English Riviera

Carrick was to get a “twin” on the English “Riviera”.

Plans were being made for Carrick to be twinned with Torbay on the Devonshire coast.

The proposal was made by Councillor Jim Brown following attendance at a conference in the seaside town.

Among its attractions, he said, was a railway preservation society.

Another common factor, he noted, was a borough comprised of three districts.

He also pointed out that there was a shared historical interest surrounding King William of Orange who landed in Torbay, two years before his arrival in Carrick.

“Bearing this historical link in mind, I would ask the town clerk to see if Torbay would consider twinning with Carrick if they have not already twinned with someone else.

“We have got to convince people that this province wants to remain part of the United Kingdom.

“I feel that twinning would be a suitable exercise to employ on the mainland as it would show that we are as British as they are. This would be preferable to twinning on the continent or further afield.”
