Children find novel raft for lake

Mischievous youngsters found a new plaything in Lurgan Park in 1979 - the wooden fishing piers which jutted out into the lake.

They had discovered a way to detach the structures and row them out into the middle of the lake with up to half a dozen passengers on board.

Police had to called on one occasion when four boys turned one of the fishing piers into a makeshift raft.

“The piers are bolted to the shore but these youngsters have found a way to undo them” said a water sports officer.

“These children are playing with danger by rowing them out into the middle of the lake.”
