Possible strike action at Michelin factory in Mallusk

There was the threat of industrial action at the Michelin factory in Mallusk in 1980.

The action would have affected over 2,000 workers.

Over 1,800 workers would have initially been affected by a decision to strike, which would have in turn affected members of the engineering unions.

The workforce at the plant were mainly composed of Transport and General Workers Union members.

The dispute revolved around a number of workers having to take pay cuts. This was a situation that the union found unacceptable.

Senior union official, Tommy Murray, said: “We are anxious to reach a settlement, No one wants a confrontation with management and a solution to the problem is our priority.”
