Portrush Firsts come out on top in five goal thriller in Ballycastle

Portrush played their best hockey of the season in a blistering first half which was too much for Cliftonville to handle.

Cliftonville started the brighter and went ahead after 5 minutes. The siege to the Cliftonville goal was relentless and Portrush equalised through Lewis Green as he followed up a short corner and slotted into the corner. Short corner followed short corner and Brent powered one high into the net to give Portrush the lead. Portrush kept pressing and showed real desire and the third goal followed when Barry shot which was deflected, was jabbed the ball home from close range.

Cliftonville came out strong in the second half and Portrush adapted their game containing Cliftonville for most of the half. The defence was sure and tight and well marshalled by Phil who had one of his best games today in a Portrush top. Although Cliftonville pulled one back, Portrush never looked like conceding their lead and were still always a threat on the counter.

Final score was 3-2 to Portrush and although ever one had a real good game, the stand out performers today were Phillip Linton, Andy Christie, and Barry McMullan.
