Rebecca Woods rises up the ranking after a double victory

She isn’t far behind in the singles, ranked number four and number three in mixed doubles.

That’s all after she lifted both the Under 15 Girls Singles and Mixed Doubles in the Connacht Open in Galway at the weekend.

In the singles, she eased past Kim Feehily and Megan Mcloughlin before facing number two seed Niamh Gannon in the semi-final.

With Niamh intent on gaining revenge for the straight sets defeats to the Alpha player in both the Munster and Irish Under 15 Opens, the opening set was always going to be close.

Rebecca had it snatched from her grasp 21-19 but then turned on the pressure ultimately dominating the proceedings from then on to book her place in the final 21-14 21-7.

It was Alexandra Troy that stood in the way in the decider but Rebecca was ruthless as she put in a fantastic display to seal the title with a 21-12 21-12 victory.

In the mixed doubles, Rebecca partnered Kyle Magee to continue their domination, adding the Connacht title to their Munster and Irish Open victories by beating Mark Kinnerk and Niamh Gannon 21-16 21-10 in the final.

With Rebecca partnering Laura Carr in the girls doubles due to her sister’s absence, they progressed to the quarter-finals but were narrowly beaten by Kerry Fallon and Orla Flynn.

Meanwhile, Rebecca’s little sisters Chloe and Paige must have been devastated after their performance in the U11 girls doubles, having given their all and taken the final to their opponents Neasa and Siofra Flynn, only to finish on the wrong side of a straight sets defeat.

But further investigation shows that they could hardly have come much closer to taking the title for they lost the 16 minute decider 22-20 21-19.
