Rugby fever for local kids at P7 rugby blitz

LOCAL Primary School children recently took part in a special P7 Rugby Blitz, held at Lisburn Rugby Club.

Since October 2012, Dave Heaps, Ulster Rugby Community Rugby Officer, has been visiting local high schools and primary schools to hold rugby sessions with a view to encouraging greater participation in the sport from boys and girls. The aim is to highlight the benefits of participation in sport and to attract players to Lisburn Rugby Club to both youth and mini sections.

Therefore, on Wednesday February 27, Dave organised a Primary 7 Rugby Blitz for six local primary schools. In total more than 60 girls and boys from six schools in the Lisburn area; Ballymacward, Harmony Hill, Killowen, Downshire, Pond Park and Riverdale, took to the field in a well organised round robin tag rugby competition. Many of the children had never played rugby before but their enthusiasm was obvious and they certainly didn’t seem too bothered by the chilly morning.

The event was a great success with many of the kids asking if there would be another similar event in the future.

At this event Dave was supported by Lisburn Rugby Club and Dave Chambers, Active Community Coach for Castlereagh Council. Dave would like to thank all the coaches and referees who helped make the day such a success, the teachers for bringing the teams along and especially the kids who had a fantastic time and all played extremely well. You never know, there may be a few Ulster players in the making!
