Foyle storm to victory to lift silverware at Ravenhill

RAVENHILL witnessed a fantastic display from a Foyle and Londonderry College team who dominated their opponents from the outset. Grosvenor were fighting a war of attrition but Foyle employed Blitzkrieg tactics.

Excellent pace from Conor Cummings meant Foyle always looked a threat out wide. Captain Aaron Patterson led by example with strength, skill and solid tackling.

It was Graeme McCarter who produced the magic with almost every touch to score a fantastic three tries.

The superior numbers in support of Grosvenor were silenced early in the match, as the opening exchanges showed the differences between the sides. In the early scrummages, the Grosvenor outfit looked to have the edge in terms of brute force. It wasn't long before Foyle were able to hold their own in the scrum. Foyle always looked to recycle, to find runners and to attack. Grosvenor were put quite firmly on the back foot from the beginning.

From five minutes in, a flowing move from one side of the pitch almost resulted in a try. Another chance came on twenty minutes. Cummings almost broke through with his blistering pace. He showed the chasing Grosvenor players a clean set of heels but couldn't catch his own cheeky kick to the try-line.

As the half time whistle approached, the game began to take the look of a siege rather than a rugby match.

Ferocious Grosvenor resistance was finally broken on 24 minutes as McCarter scored a try from another flowing move. Grosvenor were unable to cope with Cummings' raw speed and the ball was recycled for McCarter to score. Another good move from Foyle meant McCarter was able to score another try just before the break. Murdock added the extras as Ravenhill fell silent.

The second half started in much the same way as the first ended. Foyle were on the attack from the outset. Grosvenor showed greater muscle in the scrum but Foyle began to assert themselves as the clock wore on.

Grosvenor's hard work got a reward after fifteen minutes. A well taken lineout and sheer force of will meant Foster could score. Little converted and the score was 14-7.

The Grosvenor score was merely respite from the Foyle storm. McCarter crashed over again for his third try after 55 minutes. David Murdock gathered himself to send the Foyle support into raptures with the conversion.

The scoring was completed by Tom Burns with just three minutes left on the clock. Murdock again steadied himself to score another conversion.

Jack Arthur had come off the bench for Foyle and after a nervy start the diminutive scrum half was soon dictating play.

Grosvenor fought tooth and nail but simply could not stop the blistering Foyle attacks.
