Six of the best as Steven claims another best all-rounder title

Steven, who first joined the club in 2009, had another great season in the club’s Northstone sponsored series of club time trials and he will collect five items of silverware at the Chain Reaction Cycles-sponsored club prize presentation dinner, which is scheduled for Eaton Park on Friday 27th November.

The premier prize is, of course, the Sam McQuigg cup for the club’s senior time trial best all-rounder competition. This has three qualifying distances at 10 miles 25 miles and 50 miles.

Workman’s winning times were; 20 minutes 59 seconds for 10 miles, 52 minutes 37 seconds for 25 miles and 1 hour 49 minutes 18 seconds for 50 miles.

This represents a winning overall average speed of 28.183 mph.

Steven’s average speed this season is his fastest of his six wins.

In 2010 Workman won with 27.408mph, in 2011 it was 27.181mph, in 2012 27.290mph, and 2013 27.863 mph. In 2014 Steven won with 27.640 mph.

Runner up this season is Jason Burns with times of 21.21 (10 miles) 53.30 (25) and 1 hours 51 minutes 14 seconds (50 miles) for an average speed of 27.704 mph. Jason’s performance this season would have been good enough to win the BAR on many occasions in the past.

Jason’s wife Eileen, who won the Ulster championships at 10, 25 and 50 miles in 2015 and who last month set a new Irish ladies 10 miles time trial record of 20 minutes 22 seconds, was third in the club BAR with 26.018 mph while Daryl Sempey takes fourth with a speed of 25.286 mph.

The club’s veterans’ champion, John Maxwell was fifth with 22.981 mph.

Steven’s first trophy win came on 15th April at Woodgreen in the Stan Finlay memorial 10 miles time trial when he had a winning time of 20 minutes 59 seconds.

That performance was to prove to be the fastest club 10 miles time trial of the season and this also earned him the Water Margin cup.

Trophy three for Steven was the Tommy Talbot cup for the GP of the Glens time trial on 10th June when his winning time was 1 hour 38 minutes 07 seconds.

His next success was in the Ernie Mark cup 25 miles time trial, on the Caddy circuit on 1st July when his winning time was 58 minutes 42 seconds.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Ballymena Road Club cyclists will hold their annual general meeting in their Rex Bonar House club rooms on Monday 26th October at 7.15pm.

All notices of motion and nominations for official positions should be forwarded to the club secretary Hazel Hughes before the AGM.

It is anticipated that there will be a major change to the personnel on the club’s committee following this year’s AGM.
