Six of the best line out for Ulster Juniors

Chris Watson joined fellow Toon players Cormac McCartney, David Campbell, Ben Henderson, Aaron Ramage and Scott Nelson.

Chris started the game on the wing against Leinster in Larne and played a large part in most of the team’s attacks. In a close game Ulster fought hard but were beaten 16-15.

Chris has played for four seasons now in the 1st XV, making his debut when he was 18. He has been young player of the year and top try scorer on a number of occasions. He also posses a real threat on the wing and can score a try out of the nothing.

Leinter took the lead with a try on 30 minutes and after scoring an early penalty, they controlled the game at 0 – 8.

Ulster came back after a break by Cormac McCartney which led to Aaron Ramage and Clogher’s Phil Moore crashing over for Phil to ground the ball.

The half time score was 5 – 8.

Leinter went on to score another try to lead 5 – 13. Ulster upped the game with some quick ball and another excellent try by Ballyclare’s Gary Cluthworthy was followed by a forwards try after some good driving close to the line to give Ulster the lead of 15 – 13.

Leinster were down to 14 men after a red card for a stamp by their scrum half but the southern side hung on to kick a penalty and win the game 15 – 16.

TOP AWARD FOR RUSSELL BLAIR

The annual Heineken Ulster Rugby Awards Ceremony was held last Thursday evening, at the Culloden Hotel where Ulster, Ireland and Lions back row forward Stephen Ferris scooped the top accolade of Heineken Personality of the Year.

He was singled out for his remarkable comeback from injury and subsequent barn-storming performances for Ulster and Ireland this season.

It was also a memorable night for Ballymoney RFC’s Russell Blair who picked up the Calor Gas Ulster Youth Player of the Year award.

This season was Russell’s second season with Ulster Youth. He is a big, athletic second row outstanding in the lineout and carries the ball well in open play.

Due to his dedication this year to training and the development of his skills he has been capped for the Irish U18 (Youth) team

This is the icing on the cake for a remarkable season for Russel. All at Ballymoney wish him the best in the future for what looks to be an excellent rugby career.

Meanwhile, Ballymoney Rugby Club will be showing the European Heineken Cup final between Ulster and Leinster at the club on Saturday 19th May. The big match kicks off at 5pm but get down to the club early as the club will be holding an hour’s drink promotion.
