Super start to the season for Under 18’s with friendly win

Bann Under 18s commenced their season with a friendly match against local rivals Ballynahinch.

Bann started strongly and good supporting play through their forwards took them into the ‘Hinch half. When Bann threatened to score the ‘Hinch back row put in some strong tackles to keep the match level.

A scrum to ‘Hinch looked like it would clear the pressure but Bann took the ball against the head and fed their back line. From a ruck close to the line Matty Bain was able to pick and drive over for Bann’s first score which Jordan Mullan converted.

As the game progressed Bann started to dominate across all areas. The forwards were punching holes in the ‘Hinch defence which created space for the backline to move the ball. Ferris broke the line and setup quick ruck ball and from this supply Cameron Cromie was able to out-pace his opposite number, side-step the fullback and score close to the posts, adding the conversion for good measure.

Bann were beginning to take control at set pieces and in the scrum the front row of Matty Blain, Ross Haughey and Conor Burns were imposing themselves on their opposite numbers. Even on the ‘Hinch scrum Blain was winning more possession than he was losing. From such a position Josh Cromie picked up the ball and weaved his way through several would-be tacklers before scoring under the posts. Bann added a further try and ‘Hinch a penalty leaving the half time score 26 – 6.

The second half saw Bann really impose themselves on the opposition. Their support play was excellent with Haughey, Alexander Megaw and Adam Ferris supplying continuity to the attack. Bann’s backline were now penetrating the defence and further tries were created for Cameron Cromie, Keelan McCambridge, with scrum-half Josh Cromie completing his hat-trick.

The scoring was concluded with the hard working Haughey and Megaw getting well deserved tries apiece. ’Hinch got a consolation try leaving the final score at 60 – 11.

Bann’s Under-16 side kicked off their season with a narrow but deserved win in this home friendly.

Jordan McKibbin’s pace was the key factor in his two tries, with Jack Dologhan grabbing the other touchdown. Jack Myles struck the vital conversion that separated the sides.
