Tony & Sinead lift two titles but Beth steals show

Irish Internationals Tony Stephenson and Sinead Chambers from Lisburn’s Alpha Club were the top players in the weekend’s Forza Ulster Open Badminton Championships at the NBC Lisburn, each winning two titles.

Stephenson, the current Irish National Champion, retained the mens singles title with a 21-11 21-15 win over his Alpha clubmate Andrew McKee, and in the mens doubles final he partnered Daniel Magee of Raphoe to beat the top seeds Ciaran Chambers and Ryan Stewart of Alpha 21-7 21-19.

Sinead Chambers partnered her brother Ciaran to take the mixed doubles beating Stuart Lightbody and Catherine Coyle 21-6 21-8 in an all Alpha final and her second title was in the women’s doubles partnering her fellow Irish International Jennie King of Mount Pleasant with a 21-10 21-13 win over two of Ireland’s top under seventeen players Clodagh Dunne of Taghmon and Beth Stephenson of Alpha.

Beth, 14, produced the outstanding result of the day beating the experienced Lucie Corcoran of Pembroke to win the women’s singles title on a 21-15 8-21 21-19 scoreline.
