TYRONE GAA: McNulty the toast of Clone as Dromore, Killyclogher go through

Clonoe 2-8, Omagh 1-9

Danny McNulty was the toast of Clonoe at O’Neill Park on Sunday afternoon after he pounced for a dramatic injury time winning goal to beat Omagh in their senior championship replay.

It looked as though the St. Enda’s were going to hold onto their slender lead but the O’Rahilly’s had other ideas and when Paul Coney found McNulty, the big full-forward buried the ball to the roof of the net with the last kick of the game.

Clonoe had the wind at their backs in the first half but Omagh would have been happy enough to only trail by a point with 23 minutes played, Daryl Magee, Connor McAliskey, Conor O’Donnell and Ronan O’Neill on target for their respective sides.

Clonoe had missed a couple of goal chances but McNulty then palmed home a minute before the break and when Aaron Elliot added a point they led 1-6 to 0-4 at half-time.

County attacker O’Neill had the first point of the second half and in the seventh minute he showed coolness personified when slotting a penalty past Tyrone team-mate Mickey O’Neill.

O’Donnell then levelled matters and when substitute Conor McMahon put Omagh in front in the 41st minute it completed an amazing turnaround.

Clonoe though showed their famous fighting spirit as despite playing against the wind they were the better side for the rest of the game.

The Clonoe substitutes all made a huge impact when introduced with one of them, Stephen McNulty, firing over a brilliant equaliser. With 10 minutes to go a patient Omagh build up ended with midfielder Conan Grugan going for goal but his low shot went the wrong side of the right hand post.

McNulty put Clonoe in front from a free but Grugan equalised before Omagh broke up a Clonoe attack and countered in breathtakingly speed for O’Donnell to give them the lead with a well taken point from 40m out a minute into injury time.

Both sides missed chances but as the tension grew there was to be one late twist. McNulty took possession and just when it looked that he was being forced away from goal he turned to unleash that thunderbolt to the roof of the net. The Clonoe support went wild and it sends them through to a quarter final meeting with Carrickmore this weekend.

Killyclogher take revenge on champions

Killyclogher 2-10, Trillick 1-9

A massive crowd was in attendance at Plunkett Park in Pomeroy on Sunday as Killyclogher ended Trillick’s reign as county champions in a repeat of last season’s final.

It was a game where the St. Marys always looked the likely winners but they made life difficult for themselves against opponents who managed just one point from play over the course of the 60 odd minutes.

Killyclogher couldn’t have wished for a better start as Conall McCann sent midfielder Feargal Meenagh through for a first minute goal. Tyrone attackers Lee Brennan and Mark Bradley traded points from frees before a lightning quick move involving Niall McFadden and McCann resulted in Emmett McFadden hammering the ball to the roof of the net at the end of the opening quarter.

Killyclogher were in complete control at that stage but Trillick kept battling with Brennan proving very reliable from frees. Bradley was proving just as accurate for Killyclogher and when Tyrone defender Tiernan McCann got his name on the scoresheet, it left the winners leading 2-6 to 0-4 at halftime.

Brennan and Bradley once again swapped points on the restart before wing half-back Daniel McDonnell got forward to notch Trillick’s only point from play in the game.

Brennan and Daire Gallagher reduced the deficit further to leave Killyclogher looking over their shoulders when they should have been out of sight. In the closing stages points from substitute Simon O’Neill and Conall McCann helped steady the ship and while Brennan converted an injury time penalty it came too late in the day to save the champions.

O’Neill had the final say for a Killyclogher side who will be hoping to go one better than last season and win the O’Neill Cup for the second time in their history.

Late penalty seals Dromore win

Dromore 3-9, Ardboe 1-8

Dromore are favourites in a lot of people’s eyes and they advanced to the semi-finals with a seven point success over Ardboe at Plunkett Park in Pomeroy on Sunday.

The division one leaders were worthy winners and no doubt they will take a bit of beating as they pursue a fourth O’Neill Cup title.

Ardboe led early on thanks to points from Nishy O’Neill and Michael Cassidy but it was 0-4 a-piece after 20 minutes with Eoin McCusker and Sean McDonnell on target for the St. Dympna’s.

Dromore then grabbed their first goal of the game when Niall Sludden and Sean O’Neill combined for Ruairi Sludden to plant the ball in the back of the net.

Moments later Emmett McNabb pointed when there was the possibility of another goal before a free from Ruairi Sludden left five between the sides.

Ardboe had the final say of the first half with a fine effort from out on the right wing from David Mulgrew but it was Dromore who led 1-6 to 0-5.

Ruairi Sludden and Mulgrew exchanged points on the restart before a free from the latter left only a score between the two sides after nine minutes of the second half.

It was very much anybody’s game at this stage but crucially Dromore got in for their second goal in the 46th minute to give themselves some breathing space. Conor O’Hara and McCusker were involved in the build up, with the latter turning sharply before playing the ball to midfielder Ciaran McCoy who finished past keeper Ryan Coleman.

With 10 minutes to go, a scuffle broke out and when order was restored both sides were reduced to 14 men when McCusker and Martin McKeown were straight red carded.

Tyrone defender Ronan McNabb joined the attack to take a fine point to move Dromore six clear again but with two minutes to go Ardboe were thrown a lifeline when Brian McGuigan won a penalty. Kyle Coney took the kick, finished in style and it was game on again.

Dromore though didn’t panic with Tyrone star Niall Sludden getting a vital point and in injury time at the end of the game he won a penalty which his brother Ruairi converted to put the issue beyond any doubt.
