Ballymena man who threw drink round woman and later caused damage to property is ordered to pay £1,000 compensation

A man who threw drink round a woman and also damaged a door and a vehicle has been ordered by a judge to pay £1,000 compensation.

The defendant was sentenced on charges of assault, harassment, criminal damage and attempted criminal damage.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday (June 4), District Judge Nigel Broderick described it as "appalling" behaviour and said that there had been "abusive language" and a "litany of threats" made by the defendant.

On October 4 last year police received a report that the defendant, David Greer (35), with an address listed as Parkmount Crescent in Ballymena, had thrown drink around the woman.

When he refused to leave a property and she phoned the police, he then left. He later called her repeatedly, sent texts and sent Facebook messages containing "obscene language".

He turned up at the address of the woman's brother when she had gone there and he kicked a door. Greer threatened to kick in the door.

Doorbell footage at the woman's own house showed the defendant damaging a door and a vehicle there. He also had thrown a bin at a kitchen window.

A defence barrister told the court that the defendant was remorseful.

Judge Broderick said that there was every reason why the defendant should be jailed but instead handed down an Enhanced Combination Order of 100 hours of Community Service and 18 months Probation.

He also ordered compensation in the sum of £1,000 and a two year Restraining Order was put in place.
