Ulster Unionist Cllr Glen Barr issued a warning to parents to check Halloween treats after the incident in Rathfriland.

He revealed he had been contacted on Monday by a local parent who found a needle inside a Snickers bar their child received while Trick or Treating.

“I am asking all parents to please check all sweets and chocolate collected whilst out trick or treating before your kids eat them.

"If you find anything suspicious please bag it, don't handle it further, and contact PSNI on 101 straight away,” said Cllr Barr who said he had reported it to police.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for parents, guardians and carers to carefully inspect Halloween treats collected by children after receiving a report of a chocolate bar contaminated with a needle in the Rathfriland area.

"Officers received a report on Tuesday 3rd November of a wrapped chocolate bar that was found to contain a sewing needle. While no injuries have been reported at this time police would urge the public to be cautious and inspect all items before consumption.

"Inspect all wrapped and unwrapped sweets collected during ‘Trick or Treating’ and look for any unusual tears, pinholes or broken seals.

"Anyone finding anything suspicious or signs of package tampering should avoid handling the item further and contact police immediately.”
