Causeway Coast and Glens Council approves motion calling for repairs to Portrush Blue Pool
Causeway Coast and Glens Council has approved plans for a new access ladder at the Blue Pool in Portrush.
During October’s Leisure and Development Committee meeting, members unanimously approved a notice of motion by DUP Alderman Mark Fielding, requesting repairs to the concrete surfaces at the Blue Pool and reinstatement of an access ladder.
Alderman Fielding said: “The motion is about preserving our local heritage in Portrush. The Blue Pool is a tidal and rock pool which has always been used by swimmers.
“In its heyday large crowds used to flock to it for swimming performances, [but] the ladder used for accessing and getting out of the Blue Pool is no longer there.

“Since 2021 and Covid, there has been an upsurge in numbers sea swimming in Portrush and Portstewart and the Blue Pool has become popular again. The recently-installed heritage interpretation sign has created increased interest in this location.
“Recognition of the story of this place should also include restoring its heritage by reinstating an access ladder, to ensure safe entry to and exit from the pool for swimmers.”
DUP Alderman Sharon McKillop seconded the motion and agreed the Blue Pool was a ‘vital part’ of the borough’s ‘rich coastal and bathing heritage’, adding: “This restoration will bring back nostalgia for some and create brand new memories for others.
“It will meet a growing community need, and by delivering these improvements we are taking a common sense approach to utilising our natural coastal asset as both a fantastic tourist and vital community facility.”
Members voted unanimously in favour of the motion.
