Innovative new garden project set to get underway in Whitehead

A natural dye garden is being planned for Beach Road in the town in an effort to tidy up an untidy grass area and also begin to regenerate a culture of craft.

A small civic innovation grant from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has helped to kick-start the unique project.

The project aims to build on the success of Whitehead business Lighthouse Yarns, as well as the enthusiasm of many local knitters, weavers and spinners.

The wool project has been close to the heart of Lighthouse Yarns, which is an integral part of the social community in Whitehead, for a few years.

John Eversley, one of those spearheading the plan, explained, “We will plant familiar garden plants, fruit and vegetables that can be used as natural dyes, inks and even paint for the budding artist! A native hedgerow will be planted will with additional shrubs to act as a wind break as well as having traditional dye properties.

“Finally, the wildflower meadow will be replanted with local native wildflowers and grasses. This project is the first step in regenerating a culture of craft in the town. It will help fully integrate natural fibres, particularly wool back into the community - economically, socially and environmentally."

The organisers are seeking individuals and groups to volunteer to help create the garden and help with the planting would be particularly welcome.

With the first trees due to be planted this week, it is hoped to have an opening event to be held in May.
