Hatching Help for Rwanda

The Church of Ireland Diocese of Derry and Raphoe will be celebrating its support for a special relief project in Rwanda.

On Sunday, November 20, two special services will take place to mark Hatching Help for Rwanda.

Rwanda is a rapidly growing country in central Africa. It I still emerging from a harsh period of genocide and civil strife in which up to one million people died in 1994. During that period many lives were lost, infrastructure destroyed and the economy of one of the world’s poorest countries was decimated.

The intriguing name Hatching Help for Rwanda arose because the project is about poultry. Funds raised will supply up to 500 female birds and 50 cocks to provide eggs for hatching. The eggs will be hatched into one day old chicks that will be distributed to individuals, families and small farmers. Priority will be given to orphan headed households and those guardians who have taken orphans into their family.

A spokesperson for the diocese said: “These special services are an excellent opportunity to highlight our Hatching for Rwanda project. It reminds us that whatever difficulties we are facing here that it is still important to think of others”

The special Services taking place on Sunday, November 20, are in Conwall Parish Church at 3.30pm and in Tamlaght O’Crilly Church Upper at 7pm. There will be a special speaker from Christian Aid at each Service.

Hatching Help for Rwanda is part of the Bishops’ Appeal. The Bishops’ Appeal is the Church of Ireland’s World Aid and Development Programme. It was set up by the Bishops of the Church in response to the commands in the Bible to bring good news to the poor and relief to the suffering.
