Scratch Cup joy for Berryman

THE Roe Park Scratch Cup is now in its tenth year and 36 players from various clubs around the North West & North Coast entered, this year was going to be as keenly contested at previous years.

With the course in excellent condition and the weather being kind during the early part of the first round, there was a score to be chased.

The early first round leader was Cormac McGeady from Foyle Golf Club, the closest challenge to his score came from a couple of Roe Park members Sean McKeever and Conor Kelly both with 76. Cormac held the clubhouse lead until the later few groups with Sean Quigg (City of Derry) producing an excellent round of 66 which broke the previous course record. Sean recorded birdies at the 1st, 2nd and 4th holes but a bogey 5 at the 7th gave him at outward nine of 33, he followed this with birdies at 11 and 14 for an inward nine of 33.

Therefore after the first round Sean lead by five shots from last year’s winner Kieran Berryman (Roe Park) and Michael Dallat (Ballycastle). These were closely followed by Jason McIntyre (City of Derry) and Ricky Cochrane (Roe Park) both with 72.

After lunch in the coach house it was time to start round 2, players went out in the same order as the morning round. Cormac McGeady was unable to maintain his form from earlier in the day but held the clubhouse lead for a while.

Martin McVeigh (Roe Park) had 2 steady rounds of 76 and 79 giving him a nett score of 138 which was good enough to claim the overall nett prize.

After the front nine of the second is was down to three vying to be champion. Sean Quigg had a lead of 4 shots over Kieran Berryman and 6 over Ricky Cochrane. However Sean played the next 5 holes in 5 over par which allowed Kieran and Ricky back into the hunt. Ricky Cochrane played the remaining 4 holes in 1 under par for a total of 145. Kieran finished the second round with a 73, which gave him a total of 144 and the clubhouse lead.

With Sean still playing the last it was getting tense in the clubhouse, unfortunately Sean finished with an 80 in the second round for an overall total of 146 which was good enough for third place. Congratulations to Kieran Berryman for retaining the Scratch Cup.

The round prizes where won by Michael Dallet (Ballycastle), Ross King (Roe Park), Jason McIntyre (City of Derry) and Luke Thompson (Roe Park).

During the prize presentation Captain Barry Toland thanked the competition sponsors GBS Scaffolding and all the players for the various clubs for their support.
