Jordan Canavan (19), Rocky Road, Knockbreda, Belfast, was also fined £50 for excess speed on January 31 this year.

A fine of £50 was imposed for not displaying ‘L’ plates and he was fined £50 for driving without having a qualified supervisor.

The court heard that police followed the defendant for approximately a mile on the A1 dual carriageway and his speed reached 80mph.

Canavan apologised and told police he had a licence and a fixed penalty notice was issued. He later attended with police and produced a provisional licence so he was unable to take up the fixed penalty.

He was told he would be reported for driving while unaccompanied and not displaying ‘L’ plates.

A solicitor representing the defendant said her client worked in Kildare as a jockey.

She explained that when he had come home there was someone accompanying him but that person was not going back.

The solicitor said the defendant was late for work and he foolishly got into the car.

He had no record and he had learned a valuable lesson.
