Views sought on Mossley West proposals

The proposed plans will provide an additional 200+ parking spaces at Mossley West Train Station in a bid to meet present and anticipated future demand from passengers in the Newtownabbey area.

The revised plans will see the existing access point at The Glade retained as an ‘entrance only’ point, with a new ‘exit only’ point at the western end, designed to draw passengers towards Carnmoney Road North, as opposed to existing through The Glade, with attendant benefits for traffic flow and the prevention of congestion on The Glade

The Glade will also be widened on approach to its’ junction with Carnmoney Road North. Accessibility parking and additional cycle facilities are included in the existing proposals.

Subject to planning approval and other permissions, it is hoped that the project could get underway during the first few months of 2022.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Nichola Mallon MLA, said: “I am committed to delivering sustainable infrastructure that will transform communities and improve lives.

“I want to create more opportunities for people to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport as we know this not only leads to improved physical and mental wellbeing, it also helps tackle the climate crisis.

“I believe that our public transport network is vital in our recovery from Covid-19. Park and Rides, such as the one at Mossley, will give citizens the chance to use the public transport network for work or leisure journeys, helping to drive down congestion and emissions.

“The development of the existing Mossley Park and Ride is one of a number of schemes I am committed to progressing across Northern Ireland.

“Moreover, as I work to deliver the change our society needs, I want citizens to work in partnership with us to transform our local communities and deliver that lasting change. Therefore I would encourage the public to engage with this latest round of public consultation so we can deliver more together.”

Adrian Madden, Translink’s Project Manager for the project, added: “This will be a significant project, providing much-needed additional capacity at one of Translink’s best used passenger facilities.

“Park and Ride is a key component of Translink’s plans for a ‘green recovery’ as we build back from Covid-19, helping to reduce congestion and developing safer, healthier communities

“We took public feedback on board after the initial round of consultation last year and are glad to be able to present our revised proposals for further consultation.

“As our society moves forward in the years ahead, more sustainable transport modes, including public transport, will be essential and park and ride enables at least part of a journey to be made by public transport.

“We plan to submit the formal planning application in the near future, with the hope that planning approval will be granted shortly thereafter, which would allow works to get underway a few months later, with work completing in 2023.”

The consulation process, which launched on April 19, will close on May 14.
