DELOITTE is overseeing a police recruitment drive the PSNI hopes may add nearly 500 new officers to the force by 2015 - including more Catholics and people from the west of Northern Ireland.

Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin, G District Commander, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the people within the local area to get involved in policing.

“Becoming a police officer is a challenging career, but it is not just a job, it is a vocation.

“I would encourage anyone who is interested in joining the Police Service to come along to the familiarisation events and get further details about the recruitment process and what it takes to be an officer.”

The PSNI wants to make up to 100 appointments in the financial year 1 April 2013 – 31 March 2014.

And arrangements are currently being put in place to maximise police recruitment up to 378 additional officers within 2014/15, if and when additional funds are made available.

The force says it will particularly welcome applicants from Fermanagh, Tyrone and Londonderry.

It also wants more young people, Catholics and poor people to apply.

The recruitment begins on Thursday (September 19) and a familiarisation event for those interested in joining the PSNI will be held in the Everglades Hotel on Tuesday (September 24).

Hour long sessions will commence at 9.30am with the last session at 7.30pm.

The recruitment drive follows consistent calls from warnings by the Police Federation that current levels of overtime being worked by local police officers are not sustainable.
