Boxing clever for 'Help for Heroes'

MOST people take to the streets in a sponsored walk or run. Some people sell cakes or take a bath in baked beans to raise a few quid for the favourite charity, but for the boxers of Thiepval Barracks hitting the canvas seemed the only way.

Recently the Sergeants Mess played host to the Army boxing team who were pitting their wits and skills against a Northern Ireland select which included boxers from Sandy Row ABC, Abbey ABC, Scorpion ABC and Canal ABC. All of this was watched by special guest ex-boxer Scott Welch.

All of the bouts were keenly contested with the boxers matched-up on experience and weight.

During the evening there was an auction of items which included a print signed by former world champion Ricky Hatton and a raffle of prizes.

The night was a great success and raised around 10,000 for the Help for Heroes and to help fund a memorial at Thiepval barracks to honour all of the men and women who have died on global operations.

One of the organisers of the event Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) Willy Wilson Army Physical Training Corps (APTC) said: 'I'm delighted with the turn out. The guys gave it their all and provided a great nights entertainment for two very worthy causes'.
