Lisburn take two big wins

They began by ousting CIYMS from the 20/20 competition on Friday evening and went on to thump Lurgan in the Senior Challenge Cup on Saturday.

LISBURN V CIYMS

On Friday evening in the Park, Lisburn made a brilliant start to their 20/20 campaign as they beat CIYMS by the large margin of nine wickets.

The visitors batted first on a fine bright evening and proceeded to post the competitive score of 156 for four in their 20 overs.

The Lisburn bowlers held their nerve against the two free scoring batsmen and did well to contain CI to the score of 156 when at one point a much larger total looked likely.

Richard McConkey added two for 32 to his mounting tally of wickets this season while Lisburn professional Cody Chetty had one for 22.

Lisburn’s reply was refreshing to say the least with Richard Simpson and Cody Chetty adding a rapid 60 in just nine overs for the opening stand.

Both batsmen scored freely with Simpson being particularly severe of anything loose.

He finished with 62 not out from just 50 balls.

He lost his partner Chetty for a quick 34 in the ninth over but he and his captain Adam Berry added a further 97 runs in less than nine overs to win the game in superb fashion.

Skipper Berry and Simpson were a revelation with Berry scoring 45 not out with five boundaries and a six while Simpson struck eight fours and a six in his match winning score of 62 not out.

Lisburn’s record in the 20/20 competition has been poor over the past few seasons but this performance with give them confidence for the remaining games in their pool.

They are away to North Down on Friday 3rd June and away to CSNI on Friday 17th June.

LURGAN V LISBURN

Lisburn had little difficulty in entering the second round of the Senior Challenge Cup when they disposed of Lurgan at Pollock Park by the massive margin of eight wickets.

The home side batted first on a bright but chilly afternoon but very soon the gap between the Premier League and League One was obvious.

Lurgan, missing a number of players were immediately under pressure losing their openers with just 14 runs on the scoreboard. Both wickets fell to the greatly improving Mark Berry.

He quickly dismissed two more of the Lurgan top order including the prize wicket of their professional Godbole. He had the excellent right hander for just seven, clean bowled in the 12th over.

The sixth wicket fell very soon afterwards when Maxwell was caught by Lisburn skipper Adam Berry off the spin of Stevie Lazars as Lurgan reached 29 for six with just 14 overs bowled.

The only stand of the Lurgan innings came for the seventh wicket when Baig and Bingham added a precious 35 with Baig doing most of the striking in his innings of 31.

Davey Simpson was brought back to deal with the situation and this he did having Baig caught by Lazars in the 23rd over and Lurgan still staggering at 64 for seven.

The rest of the home side’s innings could only add a further 19 runs with Callum Atkinson wrapping it up with two wickets his two overs leaving Lurgan with the extremely low score of 83 in just 28 overs.

Mark Berry took advantage of the weak batting from the Lurgan team taking five for 18 in his 10 overs. Fellow opening bowler Davey Simpson had one for 25 in his full quota of 10 overs.

Callum Atkinson chipped in to finish off the Lurgan innings with two for four while Stevie Lazars with one for 20 and Richard McConkey [one for nine], completed the successful Lisburn bowling contribution.

The Lurgan innings had lasted only less than 29 overs and the visitors had just 84 to take their place in the second round of the Senior Cup.

It took Lisburn only 8.2 overs to score the 84 required for victory. Richard Simpson continued his good form with 27 not out off 27 balls while Stevie Lazars slammed 29 off just eight deliveries.

Simon Olphert must have been disappointed when he was needlessly run out for nine after an opening stand of 48 with Richard Simpson while Lazars was caught was lbw within two runs of victory but it did not stop Lisburn recording one of the quickest wins in Senior Cup history.

Mark Berry was declared the man of the match.
