DERRY GAA: Tough Cavan draw for Derry

Derry have been handed the toughest Qualifying draw they could have received with a trip to Ulster rivals Cavan in Round 3A.

The game is Derry’s second successive tie again Division Two opposition and Damian Barton will be hoping for a similar outcome to February’s league meeting which saw the Oak Leafers mount a brave defensive effort before finally securing a nail-biting 1-11 to 1-12 victory in Breffni Park.

That victory had Derry briefly top of Division Two and while things came off the rails badly following the two week break after that game, there were second half signs in Saturday’s 1-14 to 1-11 victory over Meath that Derry may be returning to that positive early season form.

For their part, Cavan overcame the dreaded six-day turnaround to defeat Carlow thanks to goals from Eugene Keating and Cian Mackey.

With Derry minors in action this weekend, the tie is likely to take place on Saturday at Breffni Park.

Elsewhere in the Qualifying draw, Sligo are at home to Clare in the other Round 3A fixture while Mayo host Kildare and Longford will entertain Cork in the two Round 3B matches.

All four games will be played on Saturday 16th or Sunday, July 17th.
