Duo ready for Spanish Elite test

TWO local lads are in Paul Kee's 18 man Northern Ireland squad for the UEFA European Under 17 Championship Elite round mini-tournament, which gets underway today (Wednesday) throughout the province.

Cormac Burke and Lee Toland are in the former Institute manager’s squad, who take on Spain at Coleraine Showgrounds, tonight at 7.30pm.

Burke who is on his way to Roy Keane’s Championship side Ipswich Town, while Toland has signed for Championship leaders Newcastle United and the duo are expected to play their part in games this week.

“Young Burke played very well against Norway in a recent friendly in Ballymoney,” said Kee.

“Although he didn’t score that day he did set up a few goals in the 4-3 win and was always a threat up front.

“Lee has also done well and is in the squad on merit; he has been in and around the squad all year and has just signed for Newcastle United.

“We face Spain, who have won this competition twice in the last three years and they have a number of players on Real Madrid and Barcelona’s books, so we know what we’ll be up against, but we’ll give it a go.”

The competition gets underway this afternoon with Poland facing Belgium at Shamrock Park, while Kee’s side face Poland at the Oval tomorrow evening (KO 7.30pm), before finishing their Group 4 matches at Mourneview Park when they take on Belgium next Monday night (KO 7.30pm).

The top side in each group will book their place in the Finals in Liechtenstein in May.

Admission to each game in the mini tournament is 2 for adults and 1 concessions - members of the Irish FA’s Official Supporters Schemes get in for free on production of their membership card.
