Carrick ‘in talks’ with striker Dolan

Shane Dolan was one of the many players who turned out at the first training session of the season at Taylor’s Avenue on Saturday, but the former Carrick Rangers striker has not yet re-joined the club.

The 26-year-old Dubliner left Carrick two summers ago and signed for Donegal Celtic, before switching to Ballymena United and then moving back to the League of Ireland with Shelbourne.

“He’s showing real enthusiasm to come back to Carrick. He thoroughly enjoyed his last stint with the club and wants to get back. That became even more clear when he came along on Saturday,” explained manager, Gary Haveron.

“He’s now living in Dundalk, handier than Dublin, but still a fair bit to travel. And, with us only able to cover expenses, there’s not much in it for him in terms of remuneration. But we don’t want to see him out of pocket, either.

“We are in talks and both of us want to see them successfully concluded, so with a lot of good will on both sides we are optimistic he will become a Carrick player again.

“Otherwise, things are very quiet in the player front. I am keen on giving younger players their chance. Myself and Steven Mills had seven years looking after Larne Youth and we would love to see some of those lads make the progression into senior football.

“The training on Saturday was great; a lot of ball work enjoyed by everybody, with the new guys integrating nicely into the squad.

“We will have more of the same on Tuesday and Thursday. It’s about getting fit and we will strive to achieve that but it was great to see most of the lads in good condition.”
