Derry City: Manager’s desire helped me make decision - Quigley

The ex-Sligo Rovers striker, who has signed until the end of the season, trained with his new team-mates at the Brandywell this morning.

“There were other clubs interested in signing me, but I think the manager showed so much desire to get me, that made me decide to sign for Derry City,” he stated.

“He really wanted me, whereas other clubs were sniffing about, but once the manager started to show how much desire he wanted me, Derry was the only place I was to come to.”

The former St Patrick’s Athletic front man picked up a back problem toward the end of last season and after getting released by the Richmond Park side he has been without a club, but that injury is behind him and after passing a medical test last week, the Dubliner was relieved to have signed on the dotted line for the Candystripes.

“I’m happy to finally have signed a deal, delighted to be back in the league and I’m excited to put on the jersey and play my first game,” he added.

“Peter told me he was looking for a striker and throughout the years I have sort of proven that I can score goals whereever I have been, so hopefully I can do the same here at Derry City.
“I’m a few weeks away as I need to get a bit of fitness in and then I aim to hopefully to hit the ground running and try to help the team move up the table.

“There’s a lot of games still to play and we want to try and get as high as we can in the league. I think it’s probably a false position that the team is in.

“If you look at the players, yes, while it probably isn’t the biggest squad in the world, but I think for quality there’s a lot of young hungry players and a lot of really good players in the team and I think in the seasons to come Derry will be a really good team.”

As for Hutton he’s thrilled to have got his man.

“We’re delighted to bring Mark on board. He’s a vastly experienced campaigner and has had a lot of success previously,” admitted the Derry gaffer.

“Mark is eager to get going, he had injury towards the tail end of last season, which meant he couldn’t really sign for anyone at the start of the season as he was recuperating from that but we had him up last week and the medical staff had a good look at him and they are very happy with where he’s at.

“We understand that he’s still going to be just a couple of weeks away, but there’s no concerns with the injury, which is good.”
