Derry City: McClean bid deemed derisory

Skybet Championship side Bristol City has offered what Derry City has described as a derisory amount for youngster Patrick McClean.

The centre-back, who is the younger brother of Republic of Ireland international James McClean, is back after having a week’s visit, along with team-mate Georgie Kelly, with the Ashton Gate men and boss Steve Cotterill is believed to be keen to sign the defender.

Unfortunately their offer, which the Candystripes would not confirm the exact amount, is believed to well off what the Brandywell men feel is acceptable for the 18-year-old.

“Bristol City have made an offer for Patrick McClean and that offer is considered a derisory offer, one which we dismissed immediately,” said a Derry City spokesman.

“Obviously we’ve informed Patrick but, to be fair, he appears to be keen to remain at Derry City to further his development.

“Patrick had recently been promoted to our first team panel thanks to his progress within the under-19 squad and while we’re delighted to see Bristol City express an interest in him, we’re not prepared to let him - or any other player - leave the club unless the terms are right, both for the player concerned and for Derry City Football Club.”

However with a few weeks before the July transfer window opens the ball is now well and truly in Bristol City’s court.
