The move comes as part of a double signing for the Wearside club, who have also signed McNair’s former Manchester United teammate Donald Love for a combined fee of £5.5m.

McNair, who hails from Ballyclare, can operate in defence or midfield. The 21-year-old has two seasons of Premier League experience at Old Trafford and heads to the Stadium of Light on the back of a successful UEFA Euro 2016 campaign with his country.

Speaking to the official Sunderland site, manager David Moyes said: “Paddy is a young, athletic player who is improving all the time. He has experience for Northern Ireland and we want to bring as many international players to the club as we can.

“I want to bring in players who are here for the long-term as well as the short and hopefully these two are here for the long-term.”
