Mark burns the field with a stunning 40 points

Nearly 200 competitors took part in the Spring Stableford competition at Lisburn.

The heavy rain forecast did not arrive until late afternoon but the strong wind made little difference to the scores with 13 competitors exceeding 36 points.

Four 13 handicappers topped the field with Mark Coburn winning with 40 points. A birdie two at the fourth helped him reach the turn in 38 for 22 points.

Two par fives and a four at 17 provided three pointers on the back nine for 18 points.

Four players finished on 39 points: Darren Montgomery, Gregg Ferris, John Poole and John Boyd (10).

Darren Montgomery started with six fours followed by three bogeys for 20 points on the front nine. Pars at 14 and 17 contributed to 19 points on the back nine. His better back nine secured second place.

Greg Ferris had the better last six holes to win third place ahead of John Boyd and John Poole after all three had scored 18 points on the back nine.

Jim Cunningham (17), Neil Roulston (9), Gary Morrow (3), David Johnston (22) and Barry McQuillan (19) finished with 38 points.

Gary started with a bogey six but birdies at the third and ninth gave him a front nine of 36. He went one under par with a birdie three at the 11th but he conceded strokes to par on 15 and 17 for a 73.

After taking a year out from golf, he is back with a bang and was a clear winner of the gross prize.

WEDNESDAY STABLEFORD

Over 40 competitors took part in the Wednesday Stableford.

There was a three-way tie for top spot. Mervyn Hewitt (20), Simon Ingram (8) and Tom Dougherty (12) scored 40 points. Mervyn was awarded top prize on count-back with Simon second and Tom third. David McCallister had 39 points and Des Magill 38.

The Seniors Open on Thursday was won by P.G. McKnight (Dunmurry) with Mervyn Whyte (Lambeg) runner up.
