McIlroy wins Roe Park’s annual club fundraiser

There were some fantastic prizes on offer provided by sponsors DMC Properties as well as some amazing raffle prizes provided by club Captain Frank Boyd and wife Jacintha.

The course was in superb nick and the conditions were windy which provided a stern test for all. Lee McIlroy emerged victorious after a superb display of long, straight and accurate hitting recording an unbeatable score of 42 points.

Tommy O’Neill came out of nowhere to record his best finish of the year, scoring 38 points to claim second place.

Derek Powell was just beaten into third place on count back and Conor Kelly won the best gross prize. Best front nine was won by Shea Hogg with 20 points and Ryan Scott won the best back nine with 21 points.

Young Jamie Cochrane didn’t play his best but still pulled off a mighty drive at the seventh hole to win a longest drive prize at least for his efforts. Andy Youngs’ huge drive at the last never looked like being beaten all day as he also secured himself a longest drive prize.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Glenn Nicholl, John McKay, Lee McIlroy and visitors, Eamon Lynch and David McKelvey.

Thursday saw a club Stableford again played in very testing breezy conditions. This however didn’t stop man of the moment Glenn Nicholl who took the bull by the horns to secure a superb win with 41 points.

Glenn, currently being coached by Resident PGA Professional David Allen is poised to make a serious challenge for the Golfer of the Year title and with his Tiger Woods like no fear attitude who’s to say he won’t.

Second place was claimed by Peter Smyth with 39 points and Andy Young continued his excellent form taking third spot.

In other news Roe Park were well represented in the GUI team competitions last week.

The Jimmy Bruen team travelled to Ballycastle GC to face Galgorm GC and safely progressed without too much trouble.

The Ulster Four Ball team hosted Balmoral GC in the return leg of their match hoping to overturn a two point deficit to also progress.

They took the match right down to the wire to level it overall but were unlucky to just lose out by one hole on count back.

The Mixed Foursomes team travelled to Ballymena GC hoping to qualify for the knockout stages but finished just outside the top four places needed to progress.

Up next is a Four Ball BetterBall competition with some great prizes provided by sponsor Alan Rankin Decorators.

There will also be the usual club Stablefords on Thursday and Sunday.
