Lisburn golfers back in business in Winter League

The golfers were delighted to get back after missing several Saturdays even if play was restricted to temporary greens.

The Winter League was played over the front nine holes with over one hundred taking part. The shortened course resulted in some very high Stableford points.

John McMillan (21) topped the field with 26 points which made him a clear winner of Division 3. The highlight of his round was a birdie three at the seventh for five points.

Mervyn Hewitt (22) and Billy Lutton (24) finished on 25 with Mervyn’s pars at seven and eight providing the better finish for second place.

Three competitors tied at the top of Division 2 with 25 points: Jim Cunningham (18), Tom Beattie (16) and Bob Hope (18).

Bob got off to the best start with 13 points after five holes. Tom had two birdies for four points each at the 3rd and 5th. Jim’s consistency won the day with Tom second.

Ken Burns (10) was a clear winner of Division 1 with 24 points. He had three birdies at the 3rd, 4th and 8th but dropped strokes at the 6th and 7th for a front nine of 35.

Ian Sayers (11) and Philip Sanaghan (12) were one point in arrears with Ian’s birdie 3 at the 7th proving decisive for second place.

There were nine twos including Graeme Kerr’s shot of the day. He holed his second at the fifth for an eagle two.

A club record of £9,605 was presented to Claire Hogarth the fundraising manager of Friends of the Cancer Centre by last year’s Lisburn captain John Boyd.

The highlight was a climb on Slieve Donard led by Jane McCambley.

Lisburn professional Stephen Hamill organised a driving competition.

A barbecue and various raffles helped to contribute towards this record sum.
