Church to offer '˜home alone' festive dinner

The outreach will take place at Greenisland Football Club, Glenkeen Avenue, where there will be food, music, chat and entertainment.

Pastor Dave Wilson explained: “We recognise that for many, Christmas is a time of celebration with family, but for many others in our communities, it is a time when they are the most vulnerable, due to loneliness, financial worries, or other circumstances.

“As a church, we believe no one should be alone this Christmas, and so are providing this free dinner for anyone who may benefit from it. There’ll be food, entertainment, and an opportunity to socialise with others.”

The pastor said that food will be donated to provide a meal which will be served by a team of volunteers from Greenisland Baptist and other churches.

He noted that although Greenisland Baptist Church has served a community dinner in the past, by catering for visiting overseas students, this is the first time that a meal has been provided on Christmas Day.

He went on to say he expects upwards of 100 people to join the festivities.

Dave indicated that guests for Christmas dinner may come through Christians Against Poverty, which has a base at the church, as well as Social Services in Carrick and other agencies. Invitations have also been sent to hostels in Belfast.

“Christmas is a time when we feel people are particularly vulnerable. We want to give them something to look forward to,” added Dave.
